Life and its lessons (23)
Gifts and Souvenirs;
Giving is a sign of caring - More than the price, weight, quantity of the gesture it’s the givers intention and way of presenting that gives it meaning. If asked which gestures and gifts I prefer more; I would choose the small thoughtful moments and gifts. Below picture is part my precious memories in a pot placed on my desk from which I usually get flashbacks. It’s a collection from different countries, people, moments that I want to remember, and journeys taken - an intentional selection building on for years; even a small stone within it has its own story.
My lesson; keep - collect - treasure gifts, souvenirs, notes and items of memories. As humans we cannot rely only on our memories (saved in the brain) as they erase, fade, are manipulated and get altered as time passes. Don’t only treasure the happy, exciting moments. Keep some items of memories that were hard/painful which taught major lessons and brought in personal growth. The flashback you get from are reminders of how far and strong you have become. Thank you for everyone for the precious moments and gifts which I treasure, and I grow from on daily basis.
Why?;
A short story - A girl saw her mom cook fish, but before the mom fired the fish, she cut the head and the tail. The girl asked, why did she cut the fish before cooking it. The mom said “I don’t know” she learnt to cook the fish from her mom. She then asked her grandmother the same question, why did she cut the fish before cooking it she too said “I don’t know” she learnt to cook fish from her mom. Then she went to ask her Great Grandmother and she said, “oh I cut the head and the tail of the fish because fifty years ago my firing pan was too small. - This story is from one of the videos by Nas Daily (the link to the video below). This is such a profound story – simple and deep. My lesson, ask why? And seek information, answers, context and emotions which can be done using multiple means.
Note to self;
You belong - You always belong
Inspirations;
This posts inspiration comes from Michelle Obama’s film “Becoming” which is an up-close and behind the scenes of her book tour. I transcribed a scene where a young female student asked her a question and her response. Question: How did you as a black woman persevere through invisibility? Response: “For me I never felt invisible. And I think, in thinking through my story about why do I not feel invisible I think because my parents made me always feel visible. It came from the simple truth not what was going on in the world but what was going on in my dinner table… That invisibility, it starts here (internally), we can’t afford to wait for the world to be equal to start feeling seen… so you got to find within yourself the tools to feel visible, and to be heard and to use your voice” Michelle
Until next time Insha’Allah – Cya
